Anthony Edward Martin, III, 57, of Kennesaw, GA, passed away last Friday, May 13, 2005. Tony was in the 1965 LaSalle High School National Championship Varsity 8 coached by George Hines, won the IRA's as a freshman at Penn in 1966 under Ted Nash, and won the IRA's as a junior and senior ('68 and '69) in the Varsity 8 while at Penn for legendary coach Joe Burk. Tony was in the 1968 Olympics in the 4+, where the crew placed fifth, coached by Ted Nash.
Tony's 1968 boatmate Gardner A. Cadwalader remembered Tony this week: "Tony had a uniquely driven competitiveness that served us very well in the 1968 Olympics. He was a great cohesive personality that helped us in the intensity of that competition."
Tony was born in Philadelphia, PA and lived in Kennesaw since 1986. Memorial Service was on May 17, 2005, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Marietta, GA with Rev. Jacqui Rose-Tucker officiating. He attended St. Paul United Methodist Church in Marietta and was a Comptroller for Cytec Company. Mr. Martin was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Wharton where he received his BA, EE and MBA. Survivors include his wife, Francine Martin of Kennesaw; one son Anthony Martin, IV & his wife, Marissa of Alpharetta; one sister, Constance Hyman of Pacific Palisades, California; two brothers, Dr. George Martin of Maui, Hawaii; Dr. Robert Martin of Yardley, Pennsylvania; nieces and nephews, and, in the rowing community, cousin Chris Kerber.
